This Fisher magnetic locator is extremely sensitive and designed to find any ferrous object, large or small.
The Fisher FX3 is easy to operate and features motion detection. The signal tone increases in pitch and volume when close to a ferrous target and goes completely silent when the probe is directly over the target. Extremely sensitive to iron with large surface area, highly magnetized objects, and long objects buried vertically.
Reliable instrument for locating ferrous objects in utility, survey, and maintenance operations.
The FX-3 is designed specifically to respond only to ferrous materials such as iron and steel. By rejecting non-ferrous metals like copper, aluminum, and brass, it provides clear, accurate location of valve boxes, manhole covers, survey markers, and buried steel structures. Its straightforward design and stable audio response make it a practical choice for field crews.
The FX-3 uses a one-knob control that powers the unit, adjusts sensitivity, and performs an automatic battery check. Operators can monitor feedback through the built-in speaker or by connecting headphones. A waterproof 36-inch probe is engineered to withstand wet soils and shallow water exposure without loss of sensitivity. At only 2.5 pounds, the unit is light enough for extended use while maintaining balance and durability in the field.
At its core, the FX-3 employs a motion-only differential magnetometer. This means the instrument responds strictly to ferrous signatures and ignores non-ferrous interference. As the probe moves toward a target, audio pitch and volume increase, then sharply drop to a null when directly over the object. This distinct rise-and-silence response makes pinpointing accurate even in busy or metallic environments.
The FX-3 is powered by a single 9V battery, delivering about 25 hours of operation with carbon zinc cells or up to 35 hours with alkaline batteries at room temperature. The overall length is 45.5 inches and the total weight is approximately 2.5 pounds. The waterproof probe extends ruggedness in wet conditions, ensuring reliability across diverse utility and survey environments.
Operators value the FX-3 for its straightforward setup, clean and unmistakable audio response, and the precision of its null-over-target feature. The combination of rugged probe design, long battery life, and ferrous-only selectivity makes it a dependable instrument for crews working in environments where accuracy and reliability cannot be compromised.
